Sorry no new pictures, we have been so busy I haven't even thought about taking any. We have had hundreds of visitors stopping by to see the new building since last Thursday and we have adopted most of our animals that moved over from the old building. It has been great. Everyone who has come over to see your new animal shelter, Thank You. You should be very proud of what we are doing for the displaced pets of the area, I know I am. The animals are settling down quicker, and the cats are really enjoying their sunny area.. They are Happy!

We received the missing panel for the last dog run today, so that should be up soon. The Snyder Company, they made our cat condos will be shipping the last two units this week. We will be receiving two 6 room units that can be rolled into the lobby to display more of our cats looking for homes. One of the biggest improvements is how our cats are house and displayed in our lobby. Everyone loves the design and enjoy watching the cats lay around on their benches.

Hopefully all the work that can be completed this winter will be finished in the next two weeks. Then after mud season we can concentrate on the landscaping and parking areas.

Now those are nice words! The animals moved in today and will be welcoming visitors starting Thursday, January 18 at 10 am. Please drop by and see your new Animal Shelter . We are open Monday - Friday from 10am to 5pm and Saturday's from 10am to 4pm. Hope to see you soon..

January 13 - We are almost ready to open!

We sure have been putting in long hours. But we are very happy and proud to be doing it. We can't wait to welcome you into the communities new animals Shelter next week :-) Yes, if all goes well we will be open for the public on Thursday. The plan is to be closed on Monday, open at the Hotel Road location on Tuesday, Tuesday evening move the animals to the new location. Be closed on Wednesday to allow the animals and humans to acclimate to the new surroundings; open our doors at the new location on Thursday. Now, that is if all goes well with the last inspection on Tuesday.. Keep your fingers crossed!

Here are some pictures I took this evening before I left. As you can see we have finished installing the dog kennels, we have the sliding doors to install on Monday. Some finish works still needs to be complete, a little paint here and there, and a few other things need to be done, most will be completed before we move in, but there maybe some work still going on behind the scenes after we open..

January 4 Update

Happy New Year! We had hoped to be in the new shelter this week, but it looks like it will be another 2 before the animals can move in. We had a problem with the epoxy/fiber walls in the dog areas so that needs to be fixed before the dog kennels go in..

The good news is that most of the other work is just about completed. We are having the final coat of stain put on the lobby floor this coming week, then the front area is done. The phone and computer systems are being installed and will be done the end of next week. The glass has been installed in front of all the cat condos, everyone who has seen the lobby has been presently surprised to see that the cats will be right in the lobby for all to see.

A huge thank you goes to John Richey, Donna's Father who has been a huge help with the installation of the isolation dog kennels and also the night holding kennels. Our next project will be the Mason Kennels in the adoption and temp holding area.

Here are a few pictures I took today. It was "bring your dog to work day" you can see Donna in her office with her yellow Lab, Molly and a couple of young pups that just stopped by to say hi.

Sorry for the delay in updating the blog, we have been very busy.. The front walkway is now compete except for sand to fill in the cracks. All the pavers that you sponsored have been installed. Some of the landscaping will have to wait till spring, we are also going to have to finish the two parking lots in the spring too. The pad for the emergency generator was being installed today. We are having the all the prep-work done now and will purchase the generator at a later date. Looks like we won't be finishing the big dog yard till next year..

Most of the inside painting is done, just a few areas to touch up. They were finishing the grouting of the tiles in the lobby today, it sure looks great! As you can see from her face, Donna is very excited about her retail space.. This week and into next week they will be installing the epoxy floors. Its a very interesting process to watch. I think I was told they have 5 different layers to install to get the finish floor. Once the floors are done the plumber can get back in and finish installing the sinks. Next week we hope to be able to get in to start installing all the dog runs, that will take at least a week to do.

It looks like we should be able to start setting up the offices and lobby the week after Christmas and the animals should be in their new home right after the New Year. So keep you fingers crossed for smooth sailing the next couple of weeks...

We have been very lucky with the nice weather this past week. The pavers are being installed for the walkway between the entrance and the parking lot. The outside dog play yards are now complete, the dogs sure are going to enjoy them. We now have heat in most of the building and the fire alarm is being installed. The tile in the lobby is scheduled to be installed this coming week and once that is done the glass fronts for the cat adoption condos can be installed. After a finish coat of paint the lobby will be completed.

The final shipment of the cat kennels have been delivered and installed in the cat isolation. The the first shipment from Mason kennels will be shipped next Wednesday, it will include all the 12 foot kennels and doors and the 4 foot kennel walls, but the stainless steel kennel fronts/doors won't be shipped until the middle of December. The prepping of the concrete walls in the dog rooms are almost done, then they should be able to start the epoxy walls. All the walls and the floors need to be done before we can install the kennels.

The ceilings are going up and we even have lights in the lobby area. The tile in the lobby will start next week. Needless to say its all coming together and looking great!!

Well it looks like we will be in by the last week of December! Some of the highlights over the past week. They have completed installing the blocks for the dog runs and are now getting the walls ready for the epoxy in the dog areas. The Fiberglas doors have arrived from TX and they are now being installed. They needed to adjust the openings for the cat condos, that work should be completed by Thursday. The cabinets are being installed after the Fiberglas wall coverings(FRP) are glued to the walls. Most of the interior walls/doors are painted, no one can say they aren't cheerful colors :-) The pavers have been delivered and now we are just waiting for the imprinted ones to be delivered, they should be in the first week of December. The only painting to be completed outside is the lower trim, keep thinking temperatures over 40 and no rain!

Most of the planting has been done, Donna and I had help from two volunteers, thank you! I wonder if they will volunteer when we need to weed?

We are thinking about having our grand opening on New Years eve, so please keep the day open. Don't worry we won't be open late, the animals like to get to bed early!

November 2 Update

Well, needless to say we didn't do any planting today, put we will be there at 9am tomorrow morning. The masons starting to put down the base for the partitions in the dog runs, they should have that done in about 4-5 days. I have been told that the Fiberglas doors and frames have been shipped and should be here next week. Right now we only have the metal frames up in the non animal rooms. Anywhere there will be animals and moisture we are installing Fiberglas doors and frames, no rusting or rot and they last forever. The painting was moved inside today due to the weather, we even have some color, it seems like it has been so long ago that we spent 5 hours choosing colors.

Hi everyone, sorry for the delay in giving you an update. Its amazing how the days just seem to disappear... Another 7 weeks and we should be in the new shelter, I can't tell you how great that feels... Most of the outside work is complete, the painters are finishing up on the trim and will be starting the inside painting soon. The back exercise yards are coming together, another week and they should be done. Landscapers have been busy, but the high winds and heavy rain haven't been kind to the plantings, but they will be OK. We will be out on Thursday to plant some perennials in the beds by the entrance and around the sign. Next summer things will really be looking good. The final coat on the public parking area has been paved, but the employee area won't get the final coat till spring; we don't want it damaged by all the large trucks coming and going. CMP has installed the power lines, so the temperately ones have been removed so the siding can be finished. Most of the duct work has been completed for the HVAC, in a week or so the ceiling can start to go up. The cabinet crew should be in soon to start installing some of the work stations. The mason will be in tomorrow to start the work for the dog runs, the kennels will be delivered the beginning of December, They are being manufactured by the Mason Company.

There was even a lot of activity over the weekend. The landscaper planted some scrubs and trees, its starting to look very welcoming. They put down a layer of fencing to keep the dogs from digging out and then placed 4 inches of stone in the back where we are going to have 5 additional dog play yards. They finished framing out the cat adoption area, now they just need to put up the sheet rock. The electrician and plumbers are still working full time to get all their work done so the rest of the sheet rock can go up.

October 5th's big news...

The inside is stating to get closed in, most of the walls are up and drywalled. The only section still not complete is the cat adoption area. The HVAC units and the heat exchange unit have been delivered and the garage door is installed.

I met the fence installer yesterday and he will be installing an additional 5 play yards out back for the dogs. They will be 20 ft x 23 ft and the base will be pea stone, so it will be easy on the dogs feet. We plan to have picnic tables in the yards so people will be able to visit and get to know the dogs better. We are still planning on a large dog area with hopes to have it available to the public to exercise their dogs.

The biggest news of all, and how we are able to do some extras is because we have an Angel among us who has given so generously to help the Humane Society and the animals we care for. I can't tell you how grateful I am and what it is going to mean to the community. Thank you, you are the best!!

Donna and I spent some time walking around the building today, its amazing how things can change so quickly.. You can see Donna scoping out the reception area, it won't be long before the drywall is up and it will look like a real working area.

Dan from Marquis Signs stopped by today and installed our sign, if that doesn't say "it won't be long" I don't know what will!

Our cat condos and cat temp kennels are being delivered tomorrow, just in time as the walls are just about ready to do up in those rooms. I'm going to miss the delivery tomorrow, but 2 people from the shetler will be there to inspect and check out the cat's new homes...

The construction crew finish the siding and the painters will be putting on the finish coat of paint on the siding and trim soon. The plumbers, electricians and drywall crews are all keeping busy. Siding will be completed by the beginning of next week, they didn't order enough... Landscaping will begin next Wednesday, so in about 2 weeks the outside should be complete except for the fencing on the dog exercise yards. The new sign will be installed either Thursday or Friday of next week.

All I can say is Busy.. Busy… Busy… It has taken a bit longer then anticipated, but the siding is now going up quite quickly. Hope you like the colors! The 2 - 1000 gal under ground propane tanks have been installed. The sprinkler system is being installed. The electricians are busy putting in their lines and the dry wall crew is just about done on the ceiling. The drywall crew is also marking out the rooms and should have most of the walls up by next week.

Things are coming together and the plan is still to move in sometime in December. What a way to start the holidays!

We have Windows!! They should have finished putting in the windows this afternoon. They started installing the insulation yesterday. The lobby floor and classroom should be stained by the weekend and some of the landscaping will be done this week. I have also been told that they should start siding the building by the end of the week...

The main roof is now complete. As I was taking the pictures the roofing crew was busy trimming the edges. Once the sheathing over the entry/classroom and garage are done tomorrow or the next day the roofers will finish the rest of the roof. Windows were delivered and should be in soon. The plumber has been busying installing the drain vents. Every drain has its own vent and we have quite a few of them!

Hi there, well there was good activity today. The roofers were on site and should have the roof done in about 9 days... Thank goodness we are having nice weather, not sure I would want to be up there when the temperature is in the 90's!

They started construction on one of the dormers. This one will be a vent for exhaust from the HVACs. The other one will be directly over the cat adoption.

The sun tubes have been cut out, we will have 5 of them. Two in the stray dog holding area and 3 in dog adoption.

We have a sub-contractor meeting tomorrow, so I'm hoping for some good news for a completion date... Keep your fingers crossed..

Seems like things picked up this week. They finished putting up the trusses and the sheathing should be up today; well that is what I have been told. I'll check it out on Monday. You can see the opening for the dormer that will be providing some nice natural light into the cat condos. CMP was back at work replacing the utility poles, they would be done next week.

Donna and I spent 4 hours yesterday with Sheri, our architect choosing colors for the walls, floors, doors, frames, windowsills, etc. Who knew how much work that would be. For some reason I kept dreaming in colors of pink and orange last night! There could have been purple too!

Not to worry, I think you will be very pleased with the colors that we chose :-)

Sorry for no updates recently, but not much has happened. The building crew had a little problem with the bracing of the trusses, but that has been dealt with and things are moving along again. Today was the first day I saw them put some of the trusses up, so I was able to get some good shots for you.

I can wait for the roof to be completed so the interior work can get started...

As you can see from the photos, we almost have a roof! I have been told that by the end of the week most of the roof will be complete except for the shingles. Once the roof is completed they can start framing the interior walls....

Just a quick update... The trusses are on their way but won't here till next week. I just found out they are coming down from Canada. They are 85 feet long and I am told that there isn't any manufacturer in that sates that make them that big. As of yesterday the first load will be delivered on Monday; second load on Wednesday and then start to put them up on Thursday. But, I have come to the conclusion that schedules can change like Maine weather!

Only if the rain would stop!! The masons are just about done, if the rain holds out they should be done tomorrow. First set of trusses will be delivered tomorrow, but won't be put up until next week.. The new utility poles have been installed and the lines should be moved over to the taller ones soon.

It sure will be nice to have the roof on so the work doesn't have to stop for rain...

June 22 Update

Well, it's worth a drive-by! The exterior walls are up! We had people coming into the shelter today saying they just couldn't believe that the walls only took one day to build. But the truth is that they have been building them for the last week, but they just laid them flat on the foundation; a crane came today to lift them into place..

The roof will start taking shape next Thursday, it will take about a week to get the rafters up. The interior walls won't be done until the roof is complete.

I ordered the mason dog runs today, they sure are going to look nice. You can click here to see what they are going to look like. The fronts of the kennels will be 1/2 safety glass with a stainless steel gate. They should be here in September.

The heavy rain slowed them down a bit yesterday, but they have been busy today. The kennel wall is starting to take shape and the outside walls are getting done. I think the plan is to make all the walls and stack them, then once the outside walls are complete they will raise them. So maybe next week the walls will be up!

The sun in shining and the ground is dry and that is good for construction! Matt and his crew from Pride Floors finish the work on the garage floor. The mason started his work in the dog rooms and will be busy for sometime. The crew from R & R construction started too, so you will be seeing walls soon!!

Well, it looks like they won't be starting the construction of the walls till next week. So if you drive by it maybe a bit quiet this week. The mason maybe there working, the wall between the front and back dog kennels is block as well as the dog isolation room. So we may have a few walls started this week after all, that is if the mason can come out to start.

The dog rooms have a floor! Thanks to the nicer weather this morning the floor in the dog rooms were poured today. The garage will need to wait.. Matt's crew worked very hard to make sure the floors would drain properly. It looks good.

Plywood was delivered today which will be put on the floor in the lobby and classroom areas where it will be stained and sealed. They want to make sure the concrete isn't damaged while the construction is going on. They still plan to start the walls this week.

June 2 Update

Busy, Busy... The water line has been installed, so at least we know we'll have water. The drains in the dog runs have been completed, the insulation under the dog runs and the coils for the radiant heat have been installed. The dogs are going to be happy on those cold winter days..

The floor for the dog rooms and garage will be poured on Monday. Matt Scott from Pride Floors will have 10 men working on the project to make sure the floors are pitched correctly.. We don't want the water flowing away from the drains!

R & R Construction will be starting the framing on Tuesday or Wednesday of next week, Can't wait to see the walls going up!

They finished the first layer of asphalt today. The parking lots look great.
They are also very busy getting the final touches done for the floor pour on Wednesday. You'll see some black pipes in one the of the photos. There is no water line by the shelter and it wasn't feasible to have a well as it would have required a storage tank for the sprinkler system. So, we have to put in a few hundred feet of water line which should be in within the next week or two.

I'll be writing again when I come back from CA, unless Donna sends me some photos this week so I can upload them to the blog.

Sorry for the delay in posting to the blog, but the weather has caused a delay in some of the work. The plumbers are still working on the drains and should have most of it done by Tuesday except for the tubing for the radiant heat in the dog room and the dog kennel drains. The floor will be poured in two steps, the first section should be poured on Wednesday. Once the dog adoption and dog stray holding plumbing is completed the floor for that section will be poured; and that maybe 2 weeks away.

The first layer of asphalt for the parking lots should be down sometime this week and then the final layer will be done after the construction is completed.

I'm going away for a week and it's going to be hard not to think about all the progress I'm going to miss. I'll be stopping by on Monday before I leave to see how things are going and will post again if I have more news. Otherwise you won't hear from me until the first of June..

The plumbers have indeed started installing the drains. They are just a little bit behind schedule due to the rain. Within the next few weeks they should have the drains completed for the dog runs and also the radiant heat coils for the inside dog kennels. It looks like the first pour for the floor with be toward the end of the month.

All of the foundation walls have been poured, you can really see the footprint
of the building. It's very exciting!

The young man volunteering to clear out some of the brush in front of the pond did a very nice job. He didn't get as much done due tot he bad weather last week, but he did quite a bit. I think some time in July of August we will be making a call for volunteers to help us clear out the rest of the brush and taking out the rubbish that has been dumped on the property.

The final boards for the foundation walls have been set up and going to be poured later today. The plumbers should be here tomorrow to start the drains for the dog area. In the dog adoption and stray holding there almost 30 drains! They will be busy for awhile..

The rain sure has slowed things down. But, that is OK as we really need the rain. I took a few shots of the area around the pond that is being cleared. It's looking good. I plan to take some more shots tomorrow after they take the boards off the left side foundation wall. The plumber was there today getting the supplies packed away in their storage unit, they should get going on the drains tomorrow.

April 27 Update

Hi everyone, the work is right on schedule. I dropped by today to see how things were going. Well, all the workers are pleased with the progress and so am I. The foundation walls for the classroom and part of the cat adoption have been poured. They are now putting up the boards for the garage and the left side of the shelter. I think they are scheduled to pour that tomorrow. The electrician will be there tomorrow to start the work for the lamp posts in the parking lots. The plumber plans to start working on one of the most important parts of the project, the drains; just about every room has a drain to ease the cleaning process, plus every dog kennel has its own drain to help prevent the spread of diseases.

No pictures of the clearing in the pond area today, but let me just say the young man is doing a wonderful job. Now I just need to figure out what to do with all the brush that has been cut done!

April 25 Update

The weather continues to hold; perfect for our construction but not for the fires. Let's hope for rain only on weekends...

Works continues on the foundation. Today they poured the right side of the building and the left side should be done on Thursday. They put in the drainage around the back of the building and will continue around the whole building once the walls are in place.

We have a young man volunteering to clear out the area between us and the apartments next door. He should get most of it done, he has 2 weeks available for us. It won't be long before you will be able to see our pond and the area we hope to have our dog park.

April 21 Update

Most of the footing should be done today; the remainder of the walls are scheduled to be poured next week, except for part of the street side as they will need an opening to bring in fill before the floor is poured. The drain work should be starting the first or second week of May; once that is done the floors can be poured. Looks like we are on schedule for the contractors to start framing the building the end of May or beginning of June.

This is the back of the shelter where the dog runs will be, you can see the opening for the double doors will be that can be opened during nice weather. There are 5 sets of double doors along the back side of the building.

The public parking lot was finished and more fill was added to the employees parking.

Quite a few people were surprised to find out we have our own pond. I've been thinking about fencing in the pond and the land at the end of the property and developing a dog park. Everyone I've spoken to so far think its a great idea. I'll report back on this once I've research it a bit more.

April 19 Update

Right on schedule the back foundation wall and the footings for the right side of the building were poured today.

You can see the outline of the classroom which will face the public parking lot.

The sewer line was also put in today..

WCSH channel 6 ran an excellent feature story on our building progress yesterday and this morning. I hope you had a chance to see it.

April 18

There sure was a lot of activity when I dropped by today. I spoke to Jeff, our foreman on site and he told me that the pipe for the sewer line was being delivered today and should be in place tomorrow or the next day. Then they can finish filling in the area for the public parking lot.

More digging was completed, the footings for the side and front of the building should be poured in the next few days. The foundation walls for the back will be poured tomorrow.

Just in case you didn't know, we have our own pond. We'll need to do some work on the area, but what a wonderful place it will be to walk and relax with the dogs.

More fill will be coming for the employee parking lot. It will be nice to have plenty of parking for everyone. Gone will be the days when cars get blocked in because there were no other spaces available.

A busy day...

Lots of things have been going on since Wednesday. They have finished the clearing, removed the top soil (to be used later) and have started the work on the foundation. The back footing is being poured today. It sure is exciting to see this being done. It's the conformation that the new shelter IS being build!

Bruce, from R & R Construction was there today and the framing of the building should be starting in 4 to 6 weeks.

What an exciting day, first we wake up to see Donna and I on the front page of the local paper; Thank you SunJournal! Then Donna and I met Chris Facchini at the building site for an interview.

The land is just about clear and it will be exciting to see the crew from Morin Excavating digging the hole for the foundation...

I dropped by the property to see how things are going. Today they worked on clearing the trees and mulching the branches. Here is a photo I took of some of the work being done :-)

Today we met at the land on Strawberry Ave to review plans with some of the sub-contractors on our project. Site work begins on Monday and they plan to start the foundation in about a week.. Needless to say we are all very excited..
